Project Title: Portuguese Man O’ War and Carbon Monoxide
In the summer of 2025, I had the opportunity to conduct biochemistry research on serine hydroxymethyltransferase, an enzyme thought to generate carbon monoxide from L-serine that contributes to the flotation mechanism of siphonophores, such as the Portuguese Man O’ War! As part of a collaborative project between Dr. Patricia Dos Santos and Dr. Bruce King, I purified and characterized the enzyme believed to catalyze the first step of this unique biochemical pathway!
