Am I at an advantage/disadvantage if I have spent some time abroad?
No to both questions! The typical recipient has spent a semester abroad, but Fulbright aims for a wide array of recipients, so students who have never set foot outside the U.S. often receive grants. Note: Fulbright prefers candidates who have not spent extensive time in their proposed country or outside of the U.S.
I am interested in an ETA (English Teaching Assistantship) grant, but have no teaching experience and do not want to become a teacher. Should I apply?
Yes! The majority of our ETA grant recipients are not pursuing a teaching career. Similarly, Fulbright is not looking for trained teachers, but rather those who have experience in the broad area of interpersonal exchange or supervision (coaching, camp counseling, tutoring, etc.)
I’d love to go abroad, but don’t speak a language other than English.
There are several countries that require no other languages.
Can I apply to more than one country or grant type?
No. You are able to submit only one application to one country.
Can I apply after I graduate and have been out of school for a year or more?
Yes, Fulbright has no age limit. You are allowed to apply for a Student Grant as long as you will not have a Ph.D. by the time of the grant period. If you have an M.D. you may receive grants for academic study, but not for internships or residencies.
